The navies of countries possess different types of warships, which differ in shape and size, according to the capabilities and tasks of each of them, most notably destroyers and frigates.
Destroyers and frigates are among the most common warships in the war fleets owned by modern armies.
But each of them possesses special determination and capabilities, which qualify them to play a specific role in naval wars, according to the “Nevil Technology” website.
The site listed 15 pieces of information, which it said could be relied upon to distinguish between military destroyers and frigates, and to learn about the capabilities and cost of establishing each, in addition to their role in fleet wars.
1- The two ships are similar in that both are intended to accompany huge fleets and protect them from air, land and submarine threats.
2- Some European fleets differ in naming destroyers and frigates because of the similarity of tasks.
3- The majority of naval fleets own frigates, while only 13 countries in the world have destroyers.
4- China has the largest frigate force in the world with 52 frigates, while America ranks first in the destroyer force with 68 destroyers.
5- Some countries, such as (Spain and Germany), say that they do not have destroyers, but the capabilities of frigates in their fleet are equivalent to destroyers in other countries.
6- There are two types of small destroyers, such as the British “Type 45” and the Russian Project 956 Severmni.
7- The dimensions of the small destroyers are 150 meters (length) and (17-18) meters wide, and their weight is 8 thousand tons. For example, the US destroyer "Zumwalt" is an example of huge destroyers.
8- It is 190 meters long, 24.6 meters wide, and weighs 16 thousand tons.
9- Frigates are smaller than destroyers, and their length ranges from 130 to 150 meters, while their width is similar to that of destroyers.
10- The size of the destroyers allows them to be equipped with great firepower, in addition to being equipped with huge radars, which makes them more capable of protecting naval fleets, especially aircraft carriers.
11- Frigates have less firepower and are used to escort small naval groups or protect shipping lanes.
13- Both ships have advanced electronic warfare and armament, but frigates are less capable of facing air attacks compared to destroyers.
14- The cost of the most expensive destroyer in the world (the American Zumwalt) is $ 4.2 billion.
12- Destroyers are generally faster than frigates, but the new versions of the two types do not make any significant differences between them with regard to the average speed of 31 knots (61 km / h).
15- The cost of the British frigate (Type 45) reaches one billion dollars, and the cost of the German frigate “Saxen” does not exceed 800 million dollars.
